AARP Michigan and the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History will celebrate the important role grandparents play in families at Grandparents Day on Sunday, Sept. 13, the date of the national holiday.
The free event runs from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the museum, located at 315 East Warren Ave., Detroit.
"Grandparents Day is a unique opportunity for grandparents and parents to bring their children to a fulfilling event that allows them to learn and play together in a safe and fun environment,” said Lisa Whitmore Davis, AARP Michigan Associate State Director for Multi-cultural Outreach.
LaNesha DeBardelaben, Vice President of Assessment & Community Engagement at Wright Museum, says: “The Wright Museum is delighted to partner with AARP and our Women’s Committee Auxiliary to offer a daylong variety of enjoyable, family-based activities, celebrating the special roles that grandparents play in the lives of not only their kin, but in our communities as well.
“Within the African American cultural tradition, grandparents have long symbolized the compassionate wisdom that inspires the young to live better lives. We are excited about this year’s Grandparents Day at the Wright Museum. The theme, 'Grandparents are Golden', nicely fits within the museum's 50th anniversary yearlong celebration.”
Activities include museum tours, dancing, face painting, reading and story time with local authors, health screening, arts and crafts, games for the whole family, and more. Refreshments will be served and $5 valet parking will be available.
