AARP Eye Center
When I joined AARP Mississippi as a Communications Intern, I expected to contribute to an organization renowned for championing the interests of older adults. What I didn’t foresee was how much AARP’s innovative approach to digital engagement would redefine what it means to grow older—and how it would shape me professionally.
Under the guidance of Kimberly L. Campbell, Esq., AARP Mississippi State Director and Ronda Gooden, AARP Mississippi Communications Director, I have not only refined my communications skills but also discovered how impactful storytelling and technology can be in fostering meaningful connections across generations. AARP’s ability to embrace technology and innovation while staying rooted in its mission is what I describe as “aging young.”
Crafting Strategies That Resonate
One of my proudest achievements was creating a communications strategy to highlight AARP Mississippi’s volunteers, the lifeblood of the organization. Through this initiative, I wrote video scripts, edited footage, and produced engaging content that celebrated their stories. My aim was to combine the authenticity of storytelling with a polished, professional delivery—a balance that Ronda and Kimberly constantly encouraged me to pursue.
The results were inspiring. The videos resonated with our audience and underscored the invaluable contributions of our volunteers. Seeing their stories connect with others reminded me that effective communication isn’t just about the tools you use—it’s about understanding your audience’s values and crafting a narrative that matters to them.
From Concepts to Campaigns
My time at AARP Mississippi wasn’t just about strategy; it was about execution. I spearheaded the Volunteer Talks campaign, designed to boost volunteer engagement. With this campaign, I learned to wear multiple hats—content creator, social media strategist, and project manager. Each role gave me a deeper appreciation for the intricate planning and teamwork behind every successful initiative.
By leveraging platforms like Canva for visual design and StreamYard for video production, I was able to create compelling content that elevated our messaging. Whether it was designing graphics, drafting newsletters, or producing promotional videos, every task was a step towards refining my creative process.
A Digital Shift for an Analog World
What stood out most during my internship was AARP Mississippi’s ability to adapt to the digital age. Traditionally, the organization has been known for its advocacy and programs targeting older adults. Yet, through digital initiatives like podcasts, YouTube cooking series, and social media engagement, AARP Mississippi is breaking stereotypes and proving that aging and technology can go hand in hand.
For example, I worked on a six-week online healthy cooking series featuring Dr. Fa. This project required creating promotional material for various recipes from the series. The series demonstrated how digital platforms could make wellness accessible, engaging, and fun—even for audiences who might not consider themselves tech-savvy.
Lessons from Mentorship
What truly made my internship impactful was the mentorship I received from Ronda and Kimberly. Ronda’s emphasis on professionalism and creativity helped me develop a strategic mindset, ensuring that every project aligned with the organization’s goals. Kimberly’s leadership taught me to approach challenges with confidence and an eagerness to learn.
Their recommendations on my LinkedIn profile speak volumes about the growth I experienced during my internship. Ronda commended my ability to craft clear and concise messages, while Kimberly highlighted my creativity and initiative in launching new campaigns. These endorsements remind me that the skills I have developed here are just the beginning of my professional journey.
'Aging Young'
As I reflect on my time at AARP Mississippi, I realize that the organization’s ethos applies not just to the audiences it serves, but also to its team. AARP embraces innovation and creativity while staying true to its mission of empowering people as they age.
This experience has taught me that communication is more than just a career—it is a tool for connection, advocacy, and change. Whether it is through a video script, a social media post, or a podcast, every message we craft has the potential to inspire.
As I move forward in my career, I carry with me the lessons, skills, and memories from this internship. I have learned that with the right mix of strategy and creativity, we can redefine narratives—not just about aging but about what it means to engage and connect in a digital world.
My journey at AARP Mississippi has been one of growth, creativity, and discovery. It is an experience I will cherish as I continue to craft stories that matter.
