Since Aug. 14, 1935, Social Security has helped older Americans live and retire with dignity, supported people with disabilities, and provided vital income to families after the loss of a loved one.

“As we approach this milestone anniversary, one thing is clear: we must continue to protect and strengthen Social Security,” said Joseph Roybal-Sanchez, AARP New Mexico State Director.

“This 90th Anniversary isn’t just a celebration – it’s a time for reflection and to look toward the future. Right now, Social Security is still doing what it was built to do. It’s up to us to make sure it’s there for the next 90 years,” Roybal-Sanchez said.

“We hope to do both – talk about the history and success of Social Security but also what can be done to protect it – during our discussion with Rep. Leger Fernández,” he said.

Social Security plays an important role in our state, with 468,030 New Mexicans receiving it. Of those individuals, 54,280 disabled workers, 39,050 spouse/survivors, and 28,994 children received Social Security. It has helped lift 132,000 residents, age 65 and older, out of poverty. The average monthly payment is $1,450 or $17,399 annually.

Social Security is the cornerstone of retirement security, but it requires action by Congress in the next 8 years to remain strong for future generations. Around 2033, Social Security will only have about 80% of the money it needs to make full payments.

Congress will need to act before then to fill that 20% gap or risk automatic cuts for people receiving Social Security payments.

The Santa Fe event is at Hotel Santa Fe, 1501 Paseo de Peralta, Santa Fe, NM 87501. From 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. To register visit: https://events.aarp.org/KMAORr
