Get to Know AARP Trivia Night Was a Blast!

RI Trivia_Featured

Some 60 AARP Rhode Island members and a number of new friends learned a lot about AARP on January 22 -- including the fact that we know how to have fun. Our "Get to Know AARP Trivia Night" at Twins Oaks restaurant in Cranston was a huge success.

"We were amazed by the response, but even more excited to find that people were eager to learn more about what AARP does across the state and how they can get involved," said AARP Rhode Island Outreach Director Deborah Miller. "This was a tremendous example of the kind of energy that's out there in the 50-plus community when it comes to being active and engaged in community activities."

The free event "sold out" in a matter of days after it was announced earlier in the month. People came early and everyone stayed late. Between trivia rounds, AARP Rhode Island staff spoke briefly about volunteer opportunities around state and local advocacy as well as a wide range of community service projects. Of particular interest, based on feedback, was work AARP is doing in Providence's Upper Elmwood and South Providence neighborhoods. Several current volunteers who attended chatted informally with guests about the satisfaction they find in volunteering.

"You could not have asked for a more enthusiastic turnout," said AARP State Director Kathleen Connell. "Many knew about our work, but for others it was a revelation. They really got to know us and they liked what they saw."
