In recognition of Elder Abuse Day, AARP Rhode Island invites you to a free, informative discussion with Peter F. Neronha, Attorney General of Rhode Island and Kathy Stokes, Director of Fraud Prevention, AARP Fraud Watch Network.  You will hear about the various types of scams, fraud activities and types of abuse that are targeting older adults and how to protect yourself and your loved ones. Local resources including intervention and litigation avenues will be provided as well.

Join AARP Rhode Island and Mary Weaver, from Newport Cooks for the next Free Healthy Cooking demonstration. Summer is at our door step so it is time to invite it in with plenty of outdoor cooking. Chef Mary will show us how to make a fresh herb marinade for grilling beef, fish and chicken as well as easy to prepare kebobs, grilled vegetables and a fruit dessert.

 Join AARP Rhode Island for this month’s Coffee Chat as we welcome Becca Bender, Curator and Archivist, Moving Image and Audio Collections, RI Historical Society and Kate Wells, Curator of Rhode Island Collections, Providence Public Library for a virtual presentation of the Rhode Island COVID-19 Archive. The archive will document the experiences of Rhode Islanders as they have lived through the COVID-19 epidemic.

Tuesday, June 1 at 6:30 pm - The Joy of Wine - Wine is made to be enjoyed, but so much of what makes it special can seem inaccessible. This class will cover the basics of wine in the world today and discuss what is exciting and popular from the perspective of the budding enthusiast, business insider, and seasoned collector. Learn about the origins of two of the most popular grape varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay), where they grow well, and why they are popular. You will learn how to describe the bottles they like and debunk some of the more popular wine myths of the world. Then we’ll take a deeper dive into some of the more traditional wine producing regions and cover the ancient and twisted world of Italian wine. Register

In order to reach more 50+ Rhode Islanders during the pandemic, we've taken to the airwaves with weekly appearances on radio stations in Woonsocket, Westerly and Newport.

AARP Rhode Island Communications Director John Martin (the former Rhode Island radio talk show host) joins the conversation on Woonsocket’s WOON (1240 AM) Tuesdays from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. as a guest on the storied “Coffee an…” morning show. Later on Tuesdays he chats at 9:30 a.m. with host Bruce Newbury on Newport’s WADK (540 AM). Wednesdays Martin checks in at 8:10 a.m. with morning host Frank Proznitz on Westerly’s WBLQ (1230 AM /103.1 FM).

The 60-second AARP Rhode Island Updates air daily on the above stations as well as WPRO (630 AM).
