More International Recognition for Senior Hunger Series

Hungry in the West End, the senior hunger documentary produced by AARP Rhode Island is an Official Selection of the 2013 Melbourne, Australia International Web Series Festival. This follows the provocative series' Official Selection and Best Producer win at the 2013 Los Angeles International Web Series Festival.

The Melbourne festival recognized just 30 video projects -- and only four in the non-fiction category. Hungry in the West End will be screened with entries from London, Paris, Rome, Berlin, Los Angeles, New York, Vancouver and Sydney.  Winners will be announced July 20.

"This is another affirmation not only the craft but also the important message that distinguishes this revealing look at senior hunger in the West End and across America," said AARP Rhode Island State Director Kathleen Connell. "We appreciate this acknowledgment of  the Rhode Island State Office's ongoing outreach and engagement in the West End Community as well as our efforts to advance AARP as a thought leader on senior hunger. We are thrilled that the Melbourne jurors have included Hungry in the West End in the festival. This is truly a great honor."

Hungry in the West End - The Video Series

Funded by AARP Foundation and the Drive to End Hunger, Hungry in the West End is the story of seniors struggling with food insecurity, the challenges and obstacles they face and the dwindling resources available to supplement their nutritional needs. It also highlights the role of  food banks and pantries, and the vital contribution of community volunteers.

"We owe so much to so many people with whom we share the success of this project," said producer John Martin. "They allowed us into their homes, they welcomed us to follow their routines and they answered probing questions. Many helped us find our way.

"The project shows that investment in SNAP and home-delivered meals actually reduces costs because these programs help older people live healthier and more independent lives, Martin added. "Many hunger and nutrition needs can be addresses on a person-to-person basis, and anyone can become a part of that hunger solution. The key is rasing awareness."
