In a letter of support signed by State Director Kathleen Connell, AARP Rhode Island today urged the House Finance Committee to recommend passage of a bill that would improve access to Medicare programs and help those with limited incomes pay premiums and out-of-pocket costs.
AARPRI joined a group of the state's public interest advocates to testify once again on a bill to reign in Rhode Island payday lenders. These out-of-state lenders increasingly target recipients of Social Security and other government benefits, including disability and veteran's benefits. Below is the May 20th written testimony submitted by AARP@TheStateHouse volunteer Gerry McAcoy as well as video of his oral testimony.
AARP Rhode Island today sent letters to Gov. Gina Raimondo and the leaders of the House and Senate, urging that the state's $14.2 million revenue surplus be deposited in the state pension fund -- as mandated by law. An article in the proposed 2016 state budget would, instead, transfer the surplus to the general fund. In addition to the letters to Raimondo, Senate President M. Teresa Paiva Weed and House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello, AARP drafted testimony to present to the Senate Finance committee opposing to the move. Below is the text of the letter to the governor.
