Volunteers Help Feed Hungry Seniors

AARP Rhode Island expanded its "Community Suppers" outreach this month at the St. Elizabeth's Court assisted living complex in Providence. A partnership with Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island, the new monthly event encourages socialization and mobility as residents are invited to a meal accompanied by live music, conversation, activities and door prizes.

This effort to breathe new life into congregate meals programs would not be possible without volunteers who not only help out with the event but play an advance role in encouraging attendance. As we are learning, being asked to join is more effective than simply posting a flyer.

"It's very gratifying to see that table decorations, some live musical entertainment and raffle prizes adds so much when it comes to getting people to take part," said AARP Rhode Island Outreach Director Deborah Miller said. "Every time a new person comes down for the community event it is a victory in the fight against social isolation. We're hoping the word spreads and the attendance grows."

The first AARP St. Elizabeth supper, which drew 33 residents, was declared a success by St. Elizabeth's staff who pitched in energetically. Volunteers also got help with the raffle from Naisha Aponte, who accompanied her grandmother Aida Rodriquez.

That's Nashia on the left with our outstanding volunteer, Julia Valles. Special thanks to Rochelle Jennings and Nanu Paye who also helped make the evening a success!
