AARP awarded four Community Challenge grants to bolster housing and residential development in the Volunteer State.

In Athens, Habitat for Humanity of McMinn County will help a local 50-plus family with housing, training and resources.

In Memphis, the Works, a group seeking to increase affordable housing, received a grant to beautify a street and improve cyclist and pedestrian safety in the Soulsville neighborhood.

Nashville’s Urban Housing Solutions received funds for a project to provide a gathering space for older residents of Mercury Courts, an affordable-housing development.

The city of Clarksville will put its grant money toward creating better signs near underused parking lots and structures, aiming to increase pedestrian use. AARP this year awarded nearly $1.6 million in grants for 159 projects across the nation.
