Protect Yourself From The Affordable Housing Crisis

Across the United States, a growing number of older adults are facing homelessness, a trend powerfully illustrated in the PBS Aging Matters episode titled Unhoused. Watch it now >>

As rents rise and affordable housing becomes increasingly scarce, seniors with fixed or limited incomes are especially vulnerable. Many are just one unexpected medical bill, rent increase, or job loss away from losing their homes.

Without access to stable shelter, older individuals face worsening physical and mental health, limited access to care, and an increased risk of early death.

The problem is not just a lack of shelter beds—it’s a systemic shortage of long-term affordable housing, particularly for those with extremely low incomes. In many regions, tens of thousands of housing units would need to be built to meet demand, with a large percentage designated as affordable for low-income seniors.

Some communities have begun to respond. Programs like medical respite centers and transitional housing initiatives offer safe places for unhoused seniors to recover and reconnect with support systems.

While the issue requires systemic change, individuals can take steps to reduce their personal risk:

1. Plan for aging early – Work with financial and legal professionals to create a retirement and housing plan that includes healthcare and emergency savings.

2. Build a social support network – Stay connected with friends, family, and community organizations that can offer help during financial or health crises.

3. Seek out housing assistance programs – Learn about local and federal programs that offer rent subsidies, home repair aid, or senior housing options before a crisis arises. Here is a handy resource guide >>

Addressing elder homelessness is urgent and complex, but collective and individual action can make a difference.
