Bluefield's Turner Jones Named AARP WV/MetroNews Scholar Athlete Of The Week

Beavers' two-sport student athlete earns AARP/MetroNews statewide honor

Turner Jones of Bluefield High School has been selected as the AARP West Virginia/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of October 15.

A senior, Turner is a 4.1 g.p.a. AP student. He is a member of National Honor Society, Student Council and Senior Leadership Team and has participated in the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Program. His activities include Key Club, Debate Club, Academic Bowl, Science Club and Band. He is the son of Douglas and Tiffany Jones of Bluefield.

Jones is a four-year member of the varsity soccer and tennis teams at Bluefield High. As a sophomore, he was a member of Bluefield’s boys soccer team that advanced to the 2015 WVSSAC state semifinals. Jones achieved similar success on the tennis court, reaching the WVSSAC state semifinals in doubles play during his sophomore season.

On a community level, Jones is actively involved in volunteer and service activities in the Mercer County area. As a member of Bluefield High’s Key Club, he has participated in several community service projects over the past two years. Jones also serves as a Lion’s Club volunteer.

Following graduation, Jones will attend West Virginia University Institute of Technology on an academic scholarship.

During the 2017 Fall Sports season, one high school student athlete will be selected each week as the AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week and recognized on the popular West Virginia MetroNews High School GameNight program, which airs 9:30 p.m. – midnight each Friday night on nearly 40 radio stations across the Mountain State .

West Virginia student athletes in Grades 11 and 12 with a minimum 3.0 grade point average are eligible for the award. Nominees should excel in one or more athletic program, and be active within their community through service and community involvement.
