Capital High School's Bryce Goldsmith Named AARP WV/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week

Cougars' two-sport standout earns statewide honor

 

Bryce Goldsmith of Capital High School has been selected as the AARP West Virginia/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of September 6.

A senior, Bryce is a 4.6 g.p.a. AP Honors student and ranked among the Top Ten students in his class. He is a National Honor Society member, and his activities include Student Council and  Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He is the son of Stan and Terri Goldsmith of Charleston.

Entering his third season as starting tight end for Coach Jon Carpenter’s Cougars, Bryce has been a member of WVSSAC football playoff teams – including the school’s 2014 West Virginia Class AAA Championship team. He is also a captain and two-year starter on the Capital boys’ basketball team, earning All-Mountain State Athletic Conference honors as a junior.

On a community level, Bryce is actively engaged in volunteer and service activities in the Kanawha Valley through various community groups. He serves as a volunteer with Special Olympics West Virginia and as a tutor for younger students in Kanawha County Schools.

Following his graduation from Capital High, Bryce plans to earn an undergraduate degree in biology, chemistry or chemical engineering before continuing postgraduate studies in medicine or dentistry.

During the 2015 Fall Sports season, one high school student athlete will be selected each week as the AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week and recognized on the popular West Virginia MetroNews High School GameNight program, which airs 9:30 p.m. – midnight each Friday night on nearly 40 radio stations across the Mountain State .

West Virginia student athletes in Grades 11 and 12 with a minimum 3.0 grade point average are eligible for the award. Nominees should excel in one or more athletic program, and be active within their community through service and community involvement.
