Irish’ two-sport student-athlete earns AARP/MetroNews statewide honor
Catherine Herlihy of Charleston Catholic High School has been selected as the AARP West Virginia/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of November 20.
A senior, Catherine is a 4.5 g.p.a. AP/Honors student. She serves as Student Body President and as a Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Ambassador. Catherine has participated in the West Virginia Governor’s School for the Arts and Governor’s Honors Academy. She was a 2016 Wendy’s High School Heisman Award State Finalist, and is one of 16,000 national semifinalists in the 62nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Catherine is the daughter of William Herlihy and Ann Flynt of Charleston.
A two-sport athlete, Catherine was a member of three WVSSAC State Volleyball Tournament teams during her career at Charleston Catholic. As a junior, she earned West Virginia Class A All-State volleyball recognition. On the tennis court, Herlihy has excelled as a doubles player for the Irish’ tennis program. She earned a state runner-up finish in Class AA-A #3 Doubles during the 2016 WVSSAC State Tennis Championships.
On a community level, Catherine is actively engaged in volunteer and service activities in the Kanawha Valley through her school and church. She serves as a volunteer with several community organizations including the Kanawha Valley Humane Association, Trinity’s Table, River Ridge Church and the YWCA.
Following graduation, Catherine plans to pursue a degree in fashion design and merchandising.
During the 2016 Fall Sports season, one high school student athlete will be selected each week as the AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week and recognized on the popular West Virginia MetroNews High School GameNight program, which airs 9:30 p.m. – midnight each Friday night on nearly 40 radio stations across the Mountain State.
West Virginia student athletes in Grades 11 and 12 with a minimum 3.0 grade point average are eligible for the award. Nominees should excel in one or more athletic program, and be active within their community through service and community involvement. The application deadline for this year’s program has closed.
