Tigers’ two-sport student athlete earns AARP/MetroNews statewide honor
George Triplett of Elkins High School has been selected as the AARP West Virginia/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of November 19.
A senior, Triplett is a 4.47 g.p.a. AP Honors student. He serves as Elkins High Student Body President, and is a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society. He has participated in the American Legion Mountaineer Boys State program. George is the son of Jeff and Sylvia Triplett of Elkins.
Triplett was a four-year football starter at Elkins, where he rewrote the record books for specialists with his punting and kicking achievements. He is sixth all-time in scoring at Elkins, finishing his career with 175 points. This season, he connected on nine field goals and was ranked ninth nationally in punting, averaging 46 yds. per punt.
He is a two-time All-State and All-Big 10 Conference honoree, and a two-time Kohl’s Kicking National Special Teams Player of the Week. Triplett also competes with the Elkins track team during the spring sports season, specializing in sprints and long jump.
On a community level, Triplett is actively involved in volunteer and service activities in the Randolph County area. He dedicated his senior football season to raising awareness and funds to support the national “Kick It for Pediatric Cancer” campaign. As Elkins Student Body President, Triplett is largely responsible for organizing and ensuring completion of required community service hours for all student council members at the school.
Triplett has been nominated for appointment to the United States Naval Academy, where he is a 2018 football commitment. He plans to study science or cyber warfare, and hopes to serve his country as a pilot or Navy SEAL.
During the 2017 Fall Sports season, one high school student athlete will be selected each week as the AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week and recognized on the popular West Virginia MetroNews High School GameNight program, which airs 9:30 p.m. – midnight each Friday night on nearly 40 radio stations across the Mountain State .
West Virginia student athletes in Grades 11 and 12 with a minimum 3.0 grade point average are eligible for the award. Nominees should excel in one or more athletic program, and be active within their community through service and community involvement. The deadline for nominations for the 2017 Scholar Athlete program has closed.
