Falcons' two sport student athlete earns first AARP/MetroNews statewide honor of 2017
Wyatt Yates of Frankfort High School has been selected as the AARP West Virginia / MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of August 27.
A senior, Wyatt is a 4.2 g.p.a. AP Honors student. He is a member of National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta National Math Honor Society, and is the son of Robert and Kristi Yates of Fort Ashby.
Wyatt is a three-year member of the Frankfort football team, transitioning this season to a starting quarterback and defensive back role for Coach Kevin Watson after spending his first two seasons at halfback/wingback.
A standout for Coach Matt Miller’s Falcons’ baseball program, Wyatt helped his team capture its second Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference championship and repeat as Sectional Champions in 2016. He earned All-Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference first team utility honors, hitting .341 (29 for 85) with seven doubles, 18 runs scored and 15 RBIs, and was 3-3 with 3.17 ERA as a pitcher, fanning 32 batter in 28 2/3 innings.
On a community level, Wyatt is actively involved in volunteer and service activities in the Mineral County area through Fountain United Brethren Church and his school. He has served as a volunteer with youth baseball programs in Mineral County. He is a member of the Romney American Legion Post 91 baseball program and participates in American Legion service projects in his community.
Wyatt plans to attend West Virginia University, where he’ll pursue a degree in engineering.
During the 2017 Fall Sports season, one high school student athlete will be selected each week as the AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week and recognized on the popular West Virginia MetroNews High School GameNight program, which airs 9:30 p.m. – midnight each Friday night on nearly 40 radio stations across the Mountain State .
West Virginia student athletes in Grades 11 and 12 with a minimum 3.0 grade point average are eligible for the award. Nominees should excel in one or more athletic program, and be active within their community through service and community involvement.
