Mavericks' two-sport standout athlete earns AARP/MetroNews statewide honor
Grant Mohler of James Monroe High School has been selected as the AARP West Virginia/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of October 22.
A senior, Mohler is a 4.0 g.p.a. honors student. He is a member of National Honor Society, serving as the school’s chapter President, and is a Promise Scholarship qualifier. His activities include Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Youth Leadership Association. He is the son of Rod and Reba Mohler of Union.
Mohler is a starting running back/linebacker for Coach John Mustain’s Mavericks, where he has been a member of two WVSSAC Class AA State Football Playoff teams. He is a two-time WV Class AA All-State honoree in football, earning offensive honors in 2016 and defensive recognition in 2015.
On the diamond, Mohler is coming off a stellar junior season in which he earned First Team Class AA All-State honors and helped Coach Nick Newberry’s Mavericks reach the 2017 WVSSAC State Baseball Tournament. He was also named to the 2017 USA Today Second Team All-USA West Virginia Baseball Team, and selected as the All-Four Seasons Country Player of the Year.
On a community level, Mohler is actively involved in volunteer and service activities in the Monroe County area. He serves as a volunteer with Monroe County food pantries and The Greenbrier’s “Dream Tree for Kids” holiday gift drive.
Following graduation, Mohler plans to pursue a degree in physical therapy.
During the 2017 Fall Sports season, one high school student athlete will be selected each week as the AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week and recognized on the popular West Virginia MetroNews High School GameNight program, which airs 9:30 p.m. – midnight each Friday night on nearly 40 radio stations across the Mountain State .
West Virginia student athletes in Grades 11 and 12 with a minimum 3.0 grade point average are eligible for the award. Nominees should excel in one or more athletic program, and be active within their community through service and community involvement.
