Liberty (Harrison) High's Marisa Watson Named AARP WV/MetroNews Scholar Athlete Of The Week

Marisa Watson of Liberty (Harrison) High School has been selected as the AARP West Virginia/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of October 29.

A senior, Watson is a 4.0 g.p.a. AP honors student. She is a member of National Honor Society, a Promise Scholarship qualifier, and her activities include DECA and Pep Club. She participated in the American Legion Auxiliary Rhododendron Girls State program. Marisa is the daughter of Rick and Melisa Watson of Clarksburg.

Watson is a four-year member of the Liberty High Cheerleading squad, where she has been a two-time WVSSAC Class AA regional and state competition participant. During her time at Liberty, she has also competed as a member of the Mountaineers tennis team.

On a community level, Watson is actively involved in volunteer and service activities in the Harrison County area through her school and church, Clarksburg Baptist Church.

She serves as a member of the Clarksburg Mayor’s Youth Council, where she volunteers time to help complete community improvement projects and assist the elderly in the community. Watson has helped to organize Liberty High’s annual Powder Puff football fundraiser for cancer research, and serves as a Junior Harrison County Humane Society member and volunteer.

Following graduation, Watson plans to pursue a degree in archaeology, with an emphasis on Greek mythology and art history. She hopes to continue cheerleading on the collegiate level.

During the 2017 Fall Sports season, one high school student athlete will be selected each week as the AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week and recognized on the popular West Virginia MetroNews High School GameNight program, which airs 9:30 p.m. – midnight each Friday night on nearly 40 radio stations across the Mountain State .

West Virginia student athletes in Grades 11 and 12 with a minimum 3.0 grade point average are eligible for the award. Nominees should excel in one or more athletic program, and be active within their community through service and community involvement.
