Panthers' two-sport standout earns AARP/MetroNews statewide honor
Jacob Kirkendoll of Lincoln County High School has been selected as the AARP West Virginia/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of September 25.
A senior, Jacob is a 4.32 g.p.a. AP Honors student. He is a National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society member, and is active in Student Council, Math Club, Robotics Club, College Summit and FCA. Jacob also participated in the American Legion Mountaineer Boys State program. He is the son of David and Katrena Kirkendoll of Salt Rock.
Jacob is a four-year starter and team captain at tight end/defensive end for Coach Randy Adkins’ Lincoln County football team, where he was named the team’s defensive MVP last season.
On the hardwood, he is also a team captain and four-year starting forward with Coach Rodney Plumley’s Panthers basketball program. One of the team’s top returning scorers and rebounders, Jacob is a two-time FCA Hoops Classic Tournament MVP and a three-time Lincoln Journal Athlete of the Week honoree.
On a community level, Jacob is actively involved in volunteer and service activities in the Lincoln County area through his school and church. He serves as a volunteer on outreach and service activities with Centerpoint Church, and has served as a mentor and counselor for four (4) faith-based summer camps each year. Jacob also served as a volunteer working with flood relief and clean-up efforts in the Mountain State this past summer.
Jacob hopes to continue his athletic career on the collegiate level. He is interested in pursuing a degree in engineering or business.
During the 2016 Fall Sports season, one high school student athlete will be selected each week as the AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week and recognized on the popular West Virginia MetroNews High School GameNight program, which airs 9:30 p.m. – midnight each Friday night on nearly 40 radio stations across the Mountain State .
West Virginia student athletes in Grades 11 and 12 with a minimum 3.0 grade point average are eligible for the award. Nominees should excel in one or more athletic program, and be active within their community through service and community involvement.
