Lincoln High's Cory Fazalare Named AARP WV/MetroNews Scholar Athlete Of The Week

Cory Fazalare of Lincoln High School has been selected as the AARP West Virginia/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of September 3.

A senior, Cory is a 4.25 g.p.a. AP Honors student. He serves as Lincoln High Student Body Vice President, Key Club President, and is a member of DECA and FBLA. Cory is the son of Gary and Amie Fazalare of Shinnston.

A starting tight end for Coach Rob Hawkins’ Cougars, Fazalare hauled in two touchdown receptions in Lincoln’s 2017 opening week win over Braxton County.

A team captain as a junior for the Cougars’ basketball team, Cory earned First Team All-Harrison County honors and Honorable Mention Class AA All State honors in helping Lincoln earn a Regional Championship and 2017 WVSSAC Boys’ State Tournament berth. He is also a tennis standout for the Cougars, earning a state runner-up finish in No. 2 Doubles at the 2017 WVSSAC Boys’ State Tennis Tournament.

On a community level, Cory is actively involved in volunteer and service activities in the Harrison County area. He served as a volunteer with flood relief efforts in Marion County. As an elementary school volunteer in Harrison County, Cory assists with Read-A-Loud programs and field day events. He serves as a volunteer with UNICEF Trick-Or-Treat, and is involved with various community service projects thru Lincoln High’s Key Club, FBLA and DECA programs.

Cory is still considering his college options, and hopes to continue his athletic career on the collegiate level. He plans to pursue a degree in accounting or finance.

During the 2017 Fall Sports season, one high school student athlete will be selected each week as the AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week and recognized on the popular West Virginia MetroNews High School GameNight program, which airs 9:30 p.m. – midnight each Friday night on nearly 40 radio stations across the Mountain State .

West Virginia student athletes in Grades 11 and 12 with a minimum 3.0 grade point average are eligible for the award. Nominees should excel in one or more athletic program, and be active within their community through service and community involvement.
