Huskies' student-athlete earns AARP/MetroNews statewide honor

Kyle Elliott of North Marion High School has been selected as the AARP West Virginia/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of November 13.

North Marion High School's Kyle Elliott has been named AARP WV/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of Nov. 13, 2016.


A senior, Kyle is a 4.133 g.p.a. AP/Honors student and a member of National Honor Society, Junior Leadership, Rocket Club, Varsity Club and Spirit Club. He is a recipient of EQT’s Student of Excellence Award, and a two-time National High School Coaches Association Academic All-American honoree. Kyle is the son of Rusty and Mary Jo Elliott of Fairmont.

A two-year team captain and four-year starting quarterback for Coach Daran Hays’ Huskies, Kyle earned West Virginia Class AA All-State recognition and All-Big Ten Conference honors as a junior. This season, he was responsible for more than 2,000 yards in total offense in leading the Huskies to their first WVSSAC State Football Playoff berth in 14 years. Kyle is also a four-year member and two-year team captain of the Huskies wrestling team, where he has been a three-time WVSSAC Wrestling State Tournament qualifier. As a sophomore, he finished third in the state in the 138 lb. weight class, earning a Regional Championship and All-Big Ten Conference honors.

On a community level, Kyle is actively engaged in volunteer and service activities in Marion County through his school and Mannington’s St. Patrick Catholic Church. He serves as a volunteer with several community organizations and activities including Mannington Food Pantry, Marion County Special Olympics, Mannington District Fair, Marion County Toy Shop, and Wonderland Learning and Child Care Center.

Following graduation, Kyle plans to pursue an engineering degree. He hopes to continue his athletic career on the collegiate level.

During the 2016 Fall Sports season, one high school student athlete will be selected each week as the AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week and recognized on the popular West Virginia MetroNews High School GameNight program, which airs 9:30 p.m. – midnight each Friday night on nearly 40 radio stations across the Mountain State.

West Virginia student athletes in Grades 11 and 12 with a minimum 3.0 grade point average are eligible for the award. Nominees should excel in one or more athletic program, and be active within their community through service and community involvement. The application deadline for this year’s program has closed.
