Parkersburg Catholic's Mikayla Alkire Named AARP WV/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week

Crusaderette two-sport student athlete earns AARP/MetroNews statewide honor

Mikayla Alkire of Parkersburg Catholic High School has been selected as the AARP West Virginia/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of October 8.

A senior, Mikayla is a 4.0 g.p.a. student. She is a member of National Honor Society and Student Council, and has participated in the Governor’s Honors Academy, Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Program, and ‘I Believe’ Youth Leadership Program. She is the daughter of Stephen and Renee Alkire of Williamstown.

Mikayla is a two-year varsity basketball team captain at Parkersburg Catholic. As a junior, she was the Crusaderette’s season leader in rebounds and blocks until a knee injury sidelined her midway thru the 2016-17 season. She looks forward to returning to the hardwood for her senior basketball season. A three-year member of the Parkersburg Catholic volleyball team, Mikayla was a Mid-Ohio Valley statistical leader for both kills and block during her junior season.

On a community level, Mikayla is actively involved in volunteer and service activities in the Parkersburg area, as well as through her school and her church, St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church. She serves on the Youth Board of the United Way Alliance of the Mid Ohio Valley and volunteers with various United Way service projects. She serves as a Salvation Army volunteer, working with the Christmas Giving Tree program. Mikayla also serves as a volunteer with youth sports camps at Parkersburg Catholic and the Parkersburg YMCA.

Mikayla plans to attend Marshall University, where she plans to pursue a degree in chemistry.

During the 2017 Fall Sports season, one high school student athlete will be selected each week as the AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week and recognized on the popular West Virginia MetroNews High School GameNight program, which airs 9:30 p.m. – midnight each Friday night on nearly 40 radio stations across the Mountain State .

West Virginia student athletes in Grades 11 and 12 with a minimum 3.0 grade point average are eligible for the award. Nominees should excel in one or more athletic program, and be active within their community through service and community involvement.
