Big Reds' two-sport student-athlete scores statewide honor
Ethan Airhart of Parkersburg High School has been selected as the AARP West Virginia/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of November 8.
A junior, Ethan is an AP Honors student with a 4.0 g.p.a.; an achievement he has sustained each year since the sixth grade. Ethan has also achieved success outside the classroom, earning a prominent internship with the Boeing Corporation this past summer. He is the son of Kathleen Airhart-Wilson and Tad Wilson of Vienna.
Ethan is a two-sport performer for the Big Reds. As a sophomore, he served as backup quarterback and starting safety for Coach Don Reeves’s Big Reds football team, finishing the 2014 season as the team’s second leading tackler. Entering the 2015 football season, he earned the starting quarterback role for the Big Reds before seeing his season cut short by a knee injury.
In track and field, Ethan specializes in sprints, hurdles, and the long jump. He was a WVSSAC State Track Championship qualifier as a sophomore in the Shuttle Hurdle relay.
On a community level, Ethan participates in volunteer and service activities for the Wood County Society. He has assisted with their annual support telethon, helping to raise more than $100,000 to fund programs for children and adults with disabilities. For the past three summers, Ethan has served as a volunteer counselor for the Society’s Camp Echo program for adults with cognitive/intellectual and/or physical disabilities.
Following graduation, Ethan plans to pursue an Engineering degree at West Virginia University and hopes to pursue a career path in project management.
During the 2015 Fall Sports season, one high school student athlete will be selected each week as the AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week and recognized on the popular West Virginia MetroNews High School GameNight program, which airs 9:30 p.m. – midnight each Friday night on nearly 40 radio stations across the Mountain State .
West Virginia student athletes in Grades 11 and 12 with a minimum 3.0 grade point average are eligible for the award. Nominees should excel in one or more athletic program, and be active within their community through service and community involvement.
