Mason County two-sport athlete earns statewide honor
Aden Yates of Point Pleasant (WV) High School has been selected as the AARP West Virginia/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of October 5.
A senior, Aden is a 4.3 g.p.a. honors student. He is a member of the National Honor Society and a Promise Scholarship qualifier, and has served as a class officer. His school activities include Prom Committee, Math Field Day, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He is the son of Rob and Angela Yates of Point Pleasant.
A two-time Class AAA All-State football honoree and three year letter winner for Point Pleasant Football Coach Dave Darst, Aden is considered one of the state’s top quarterbacks. He has been a member of three WVSSAC playoff teams, and was among the state’s leading passers across all classifications during his sophomore and junior seasons. He is also a three-year letter winner and team captain for the Point Pleasant basketball team.
On a community level, Aden is actively engaged in volunteer and service activities in Mason County through the LifeSpring Church and various community groups. He serves as a coach and volunteer with Point Pleasant’s Biddy League football and basketball programs. As a peer mentor in his community, he has participated in the production of anti-bullying videos.
Following his graduation this year, Aden plans to pursue a degree in chemical engineering.
During the 2014 Fall Sports season, one high school student athlete will be selected each week as the AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week and recognized on the popular West Virginia MetroNews High School GameNight program, which airs 9:30 p.m. – midnight each Friday night on nearly 40 radio stations across the Mountain State .
West Virginia student athletes in Grades 11 and 12 with a minimum 3.0 grade point average are eligible for the award. Nominees should excel in one or more athletic program, and be active within their community through service and community involvement.
