Preston High School's Allison Smith Named AARP WV/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week

Allison Smith of Preston High School has been selected as the AARP West Virginia/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of October 2.

A senior, Allison is a 4.375 g.p.a. AP Honors student. She is a member of National Honor Society, Knights of the Roundtable, and serves as president of her school’s Health Sciences and Technology Academy (HSTA) chapter. Allison is active in Future Business Leaders of American (FBLA), earning first place honors for Public Speaking at FBLA’s West Virginia State Competition in April, 2016. She is the daughter of Ed and Karen Smith of Newburg.

Allison is a three-year starter and team captain for Coach Mike Daugherty’s Preston volleyball team, helping to lead the Lady Knights to a 6-3 start this season.

On a community level, Allison is actively involved in volunteer and service activities in the Preston County area through her school and Reedsville United Methodist Church. She has served as a volunteer with Hospice, Valley Food Pantry, Preston Memorial Hospital and West Preston Middle School, logging more than 100 hours of community service during her time as a student at Preston High.

Allison will attend West Virginia University next fall, where she plans to major in exercise physiology. She hopes to attend medical school following the completion of her undergraduate degree.

During the 2016 Fall Sports season, one high school student athlete will be selected each week as the AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week and recognized on the popular West Virginia MetroNews High School GameNight program, which airs 9:30 p.m. – midnight each Friday night on nearly 40 radio stations across the Mountain State.

West Virginia student athletes in Grades 11 and 12 with a minimum 3.0 grade point average are eligible for the award. Nominees should excel in one or more athletic program, and be active within their community through service and community involvement.
