Weir High School's Mason Rice Named AARP WV/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week

Red Riders’ two sport standout earns AARP/MetroNews statewide honor

Mason Rice of Weir High School has been selected as the AARP West Virginia/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of September 17.

A senior, Mason is a 4.0 g.p.a. AP Honors student. He is a member of National Honor Society and a 2017 Ohio Valley Athletic Conference All-Conference Academic Team honoree. Mason is the son of Tommy and Barbara Rice of Weirton.

A team captain for Coach Tony Filberto’s Red Riders football team, Mason is a starting offensive guard and defensive lineman. He is also a three-year letterwinner with the Weir track and field program, competing in throwing events during the spring track season with the Red Raiders.

On a community level, Mason is actively involved in volunteer and service activities in the Hancock County area. He has served as a volunteer with several organizations including Brooke County Schools’ Back Pack for Students program and the annual Autism Awareness Walk-a-thon to benefit Ryan’s Hope of Prayer and Healing for Autism, a Follansbee-based organization which provides iPads to youth with autism to improve their communication with others.

Mason is still considering his college options, and is interested in pursuing a degree in the math and science disciplines.

During the 2017 Fall Sports season, one high school student athlete will be selected each week as the AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week and recognized on the popular West Virginia MetroNews High School GameNight program, which airs 9:30 p.m. – midnight each Friday night on nearly 40 radio stations across the Mountain State .

West Virginia student athletes in Grades 11 and 12 with a minimum 3.0 grade point average are eligible for the award. Nominees should excel in one or more athletic program, and be active within their community through service and community involvement.
