Making a Difference is Ageless

August 27 thursdays.png

You live. You learn. You give back. These words represent the heart of the AARP Purpose Prize, which honors the amazing work that 50+ individuals do for their communities. The AARP Purpose Prize provides financial support to a non-profit organization founded, or co-founded, by the five recipients of this annual award. In addition to these five winners, ten fellows also receive prizes to help them continue the important work that their non-profit organizations do every day. The recipients of this award embody AARP’s commitment to writing a new story of aging by showcasing how 50+ individuals contribute to their communities in remarkable ways.

Because August is Boomers Making a Difference Month, Thursdays With AARP Wisconsin wants to take a moment to shine a light on the amazing work happening right here in Wisconsin by talking with two previous winners of the AARP Purpose Prize from the state. Join us Thursday August 27, at 12:00 pm CT for a conversation with 2018 winner Monica Kamal Spaeni of Access Ability Wisconsin and 2019 winner Sister Edna Lonergan of St. Ann Center for Intergenerational Care.

Monica Kamal Spaeni founded Access Ability Wisconsin (AAW) at 48 to make outdoor wheelchairs and adaptive sporting equipment available to communities in Wisconsin. Inspired by her own desire to enjoy the outdoor activities she loves, AAW enables individuals with mobility issues to experience the freedom and joy of nature by providing these free community resources.

Also working in Wisconsin, Sister Edna Lonergan founded St. Ann Adult Day Care in the basement of the health center of the Sisters of St. Francis Assisi in Milwaukee in 1983. Since then, the organization has thrived and grown into the St. Ann Center for Intergenerational Care, providing vital, compassionate care to people of all ages and abilities in two Milwaukee locations. Join us to learn even more about the amazing and inspiring work that these recipients of the AARP Purpose Award do to make a difference.

You can also join the conversation by sharing your comments and/or questions live via Facebook and YouTube, or you can send your questions before, during, or after the presentation to ammiller@aarp.org.
