Recognizing Those Who Serve with the Honoring Heroes Contest

Honor Those Who Serve With Create the Good's Honoring Heroes Contest

Did you know that AARP was founded by a volunteer? That’s right, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, a long-time educator and dedicated volunteer, founded AARP in 1958 at the age of 73. Dr. Andrus believed that we all have the ability to create good by giving back, and her personal motto, “To serve, not to be served,” is the foundation for everything that AARP does to this day. AARP knows the impact that those who serve make in their communities, and the Create the Good Honoring Heroes Contest is one way that you can say “thank you” for all that they do. Specifically, the Create the Good Honoring Heroes Contest celebrates veterans and non-profit organizations serving veterans. AARP invites you to submit an essay detailing how your hero has made a difference in your life. Not only will your essay be featured for the general public to read, spotlighting the amazing work these heroes do, but the winner will also receive a $5,000 prize.

To learn more about the Honoring Heroes Contest, tune in to Thursdays with AARP Wisconsin on Thursday, December 3rd at 12:00pm CT. Create the Good’s Carole Ricks and host Amber Miller will discuss the purpose of the contest, how to submit essays, and other important details. If you know a veteran, or a non-profit organization serving veterans, that you want to honor this year, we invite you to tune in to the show and submit an essay to show your hero how much you appreciate all the work that they do for you and your community.

Looking for a way to give back too? We know it isn’t always easy to find the right volunteer opportunity for you, and so AARP’s Create the Good is here to help. Visit the Create the Good page to discover a wide variety of volunteer opportunities in your community (including virtual volunteering). If you’re looking to create new volunteer projects in your community, or you work with a non-profit that needs volunteers, Create the Good has resources for that as well. Together we can make a difference.

You can also join the conversation on Thursday by sharing your comments and/or questions live via Facebook and YouTube, or you can send your questions before, during, or after the presentation to ammiller@aarp.org.
