Every Tuesday, locals 50+ pair with college students for an engaging 45-minute walk through the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse campus with AARP, WI volunteers. This motivating program launched two years ago through a partnership between AARP WI and the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse with inspiration from Walk With A Doc.
With some 30-50 plus walkers and growing, it’s really engaging participating walkers.
“There’s huge ‘Walk with an Eagle’ pride within the ‘Walk with an Eagle’ program,” said Dr. Jennifer Taylor, UW-La Crosse professor and program co-creator. “A lot of this is from AARP, they provided the resources we didn’t have. It’s a perfect partnership.”
“Chuck was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s in 2018, being a caregiver for Chuck and Walking with an Eagle gives me 45 minutes to be engaged in an adult conversation,” said AARP WI member, Sharon Z. “We pull up every week and he just lights up. I don’t think this really would have been possible without AARP.”
