Staying Active and Embracing Winter

As any Wisconsin resident knows, winter can be a tough time for a number of reasons. With COVID-19 restrictions in place, things like social isolation and cabin fever are an even bigger concern than usual, but you don’t have to be stuck indoors just because the temperature has dropped. Not sure what to do this winter to stay active and healthy? Programs like Eau Claire’s Wintermission initiative has resources to help everyone, no matter their age, embrace all that winter has to offer. Partnering with 880 Cities--a non-profit organization that enhances mobility and public spaces to create more vibrant, healthy, and equitable communities--the city of Eau Claire has established various programs to promote winter-friendly activities. Some of the Eau Claire Wintermission programs include a plowed recreation winter path, a winter gear sharing program, and social media challenges with prizes to encourage everyone to stay active and embrace all the joys that winter has to offer.

To learn even more about the great resources available to help you stay active and safe this winter, tune in to Thursdays with AARP Wisconsin on Thursday, February 4th at 12:00pm CT. Guests David Simor of 880 Cities and Cortney Craxler and Jake Wrasse of Eau Claire's Wintermission initiative will be discussing what they’ve learned from their experiences, along with ideas for how other communities can create similar initiatives to promote winter-friendly activities to combat social isolation during the coldest months of the year.

You can also join the conversation on Thursday by sharing your comments and/or questions live via Facebook and YouTube, or you can send your questions before, during, or after the presentation to ammiller@aarp.org.
