Supporting and Investing in Wisconsin Communities

In 2017, AARP created the Community Challenge Grant to help fund projects that further the mission of the Livable Communities initiative. Tasked with creating and sustaining communities that are accessible for people of all ages, this initiative is an important part of AARP’s commitment to enabling all people to choose how they live as they age. This year, AARP reviewed more than 2,800 applications from nonprofits and government entities.

On August 20th, 184 awardees were announced, distributing $2.4 million to support projects with goals of creating vibrant public spaces for people of all ages to gather, increasing the ease and usability of local transportation options, providing affordable and accessible housing opportunities, inspiring civic engagement, and supporting Coronavirus response and recovery services. Four Wisconsin organizations were awarded Community Challenge Grants, earning over $78,000 for their projects in Spooner, Milwaukee, and Cuba City.

Join Thursdays With AARP Wisconsin on Thursday September 3, at 12:00pm CT for a conversation with Bob Jones from the City of Cuba City and Jonathan Browne and Joseph Kaltenberg from the City of Milwaukee to learn more about two of these projects. Bob Jones, City of Cuba City Economic Development Director, will be discussing the city’s project that will create an intergenerational gathering place by working with community partners like the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Representing MKE Parks, Jonathan Browne, Assistant Program Coordinator, and Joseph Kaltenberg, Program Coordinator, will share the City of Milwaukee’s plan to reconstruct a neighborhood park to create an accessible space where people of all ages can gather and socialize.
