Cabell Midland's Brooks Gillispie named AARP WV/MetroNews Athlete of the Week

Knights' football captain receives statewide honor

 

Brooks Gillispie of  Cabell Midland High School has been selected as the  AARP West Virginia/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week for the  week of October 13.

A senior, Brooks is a 4.3 g.p.a. AP Honors student. He is a National Honor Society member and Student Body Vice President, and served as his Class President as a junior. He is the son of James and Deborah Gillispie of Ona.

In both his academic and athletic pursuits, Gillispie has excelled at the Cabell County school. A 6’3” starting tight end, he is a team captain for Coach Luke Salmons’ Knights. Brooks was a member of Cabell Midland’s 2012 West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission (WVSSAC) Class AAA State Runner-Up football team that achieved the first undefeated regular season in school history.

On a community level, Brooks is actively involved in volunteer and service activities. He mentors youth as a coach and volunteer with youth soccer programs. As a volunteer with the Marshall University Christian Medical Society, he accompanied and worked alongside his mother – a Huntington-area physician – on a 2012 medical mission trip to the Dominican Republic. Brooks also is actively engaged as a volunteer in homeless mission work in the greater Huntington area.

His future aspirations are to earn his college degree and possibly pursue a career in the medical field.

During the 2013 Fall Sports season, one high school student athlete will be selected each week as the  AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week and recognized on the popular  West Virginia MetroNews High School GameNight program, which airs on  nearly 40 radio stations across the Mountain State each Friday night (9:30 - midnight) during the High School football season.

West Virginia student athletes in Grades 11 and 12 with a minimum 3.0 grade point average are eligible for the award. Nominees should excel in one or more athletic program, and be active within their community through service and community involvement.  Nomination forms may be completed online at http://wvmetronews.com/scholar-athlete-of-the-week – or are available at www.aarp.org/wv.
