AARP Alabama is partnering with WBRC Fox 6 in Birmingham to bring Shred-A-Thons to several communities around the Birmingham and north central Alabama area. Area residents can bring up to 3 bags or file boxes of personal documents for shredding. Identity theft experts recommend shredding any old documents that contain account numbers, Social Security numbers, or other personal financial information.
The Shred-A-Thons are FREE to the public. We are asking for a voluntary donation of a non-perishable food item, which will be given to area food banks. All documents will be shredded on-site by Secure Destruction Service.
Our first Shred-A-Thon in Tuscaloosa on August 12 was a HUGE success. We shredded almost 10,000 pounds of documents for Tuscaloosa-area residents. We also collected more than 800 pounds of food donations for the West Alabama Food Bank.
Join us for upcoming Shred-A-Thons on the following dates between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m.:
August 20: Anniston - City Meeting Center, 1615 Noble Street
August 27: Birmingham - 1st Avenue South, by Railroad Park
September 10: Cullman - Old Walmart parking lot on Hwy 31 and King Edward Street
September 17: Alabaster - Whitestone Shopping Center on Highway 119
NOTE: Please don't include 3-ring binders, spiral binders, or any plastic, metal, or household trash.
AARP Alabama is co-sponsoring these events as part of our Fraud Watch Network initiative, which helps to notify and educate the public about scams and frauds.
