One of the best strategies for protecting yourself against identity theft is to shred your personal documents. Throwing them in the trash without shredding gives thieves access to your personal information. AARP Alabama wants to help you avoid identity theft by co-sponsoring FREE Shred-A-Thons in October.

On Wednesday, October 21, we will be at First United Methodist Church, located at 6471 US Highway 11 in Springville. We are teaming up with WBRC Fox 6 and Secure Destruction from 7 AM to 1 PM and shredding documents on-site.

PLEASE NOTE: You can bring up to 3 bags or 3 copy paper-sized boxes of documents (paper only) to shred. No metal, three-ring binders, or large metal binder clips will be accepted.

AARP’s Fraud Watch Network recommends that you shred the following:

•Cancelled checks
•ATM and Credit card receipts
•Old credit cards
•Credit card offers you get in the mail
•Old bills
•Old bank statements
•Tax records and receipts (keep for 7 years)
•Medical records and bills (keep for a year)
•Pay stubs (keep for a year)

Join the AARP Fraud Watch Network and stay current on fraud and scams in your area! You don’t have to be an AARP member or over age 50 to join the Fraud Watch Network. It is a FREE service from AARP for people of all ages.
