AARP Alabama Recognizes Jane and Mike Moore of Tuscumbia for their Dedication and Commitment to Community Service with its Most Prestigious Volunteer Award

Montgomery, AL – Jane and Mike Moore of Tuscumbia have been selected by AARP, the nonprofit organization for people 50 and older, to receive the 2015 AARP Alabama Andrus Award for Community Service -- the Association’s most prestigious and visible state volunteer award for community service.

AARP Alabama selected the Moores for their remarkable service which has greatly benefited their community, supported AARP’s vision and mission, and inspired other volunteers. The Moores ran AARP Foundation’s Tax-Aide program in the state from 2007-2013, annually assisting more than 12,000 seniors and low-income residents in preparing their tax returns. This free service saved Alabama taxpayers millions of dollars during the Moores’ tenure as leaders.

Beyond their work with AARP, Mike also serves in the Helping Hands ministry at Highland Park Church of Christ in Muscle Shoals, and currently is serving his third term as Disaster Services Chairman for the Northwest Alabama Chapter of the American Red Cross. Jane gives her time to the American Cancer Society, volunteers with their church, and went on a one-month mission to Nepal and Bangladesh in 2014.

“This award acts as a symbol to the public that we can all work together for the benefit of our neighbors and community,” says Candace Williams, AARP Alabama interim state director. “AARP has long valued the spirit of volunteerism and both Jane and Mike offer a tremendous example of selfless giving to their community, and our entire state. We're so grateful to have their contributions."

Recipients across the nation were chosen for their ability to enhance the lives of AARP members and prospective members, improve the community in or for which the work was performed, and inspire others to volunteer.
