AARP Alabama Selects Montgomery Area Volunteer for Prestigious State Volunteer Award

Rozelia Harris was chosen for her dedication and commitment to community service

(MONTGOMERY, AL) – Rozelia Harris has been selected by AARP, the nonprofit organization for people 50 and older, to receive the 2019 AARP Alabama Andrus Award for Community Service – the Association’s most prestigious and visible state volunteer award for community service.

AARP Alabama selected Ms. Harris for her remarkable service which has greatly benefited her community, supported AARP’s vision and mission, and inspired other volunteers.

Even at age 88, Ms. Harris continues to help the people in her neighborhood, city, church and her own family. For several years, she opened her home to multiple interns working with Common Ground Ministry, allowing them to live with her for months at a time. She directs a non-profit that gives scholarships to deserving students at Alabama State University. She’s also a member of the Montgomery Clean City Commission, Common Ground Ministry, and Mercy House Ministry.

AARP Alabama will formally present the award to Ms. Harris at a reception ceremony December 9, 5:30 p.m. at the AARP Alabama state office at 400 S. Union St., Suite 100.

“This award acts as a symbol to the public that we can all work together for positive social change,” says Candy Williams, AARP Alabama state director. “AARP has long valued the spirit of volunteerism and the important contributions volunteers make to their communities, neighbors, and the programs they serve.”

Recipients across the nation were chosen for their ability to enhance the lives of AARP members and prospective members, improve the community in or for which the work was performed, and inspire others to volunteer.
