Mike and Jane Moore receive the AARP Alabama Andrus Award for 2015

AARP Alabama is very pleased to announce that Mike and Jane Moore of Tuscumbia are the recipients of the 2015 Andrus Award for Service. This prestigious annual award is based on the Moores' remarkable body of work as volunteers with AARP, and with their church and other community organizations.

The Andrus Award was presented to the Moores at Highland Park Church of Christ in Muscle Shoals on Sunday, October 25. AARP Alabama's Anne Hails, along with Executive Council member Tom DeLong, were both on hand to make the presentation and celebrate this achievement.

The Moores ran AARP Foundation’s Tax-Aide program in the state from 2007-2013, annually assisting more than 12,000 seniors and low-income residents in preparing their tax returns. This free service saved Alabama taxpayers millions of dollars during the Moores’ tenure as leaders.

Beyond their work with AARP, Mike also serves in the Helping Hands ministry at Highland Park Church of Christ in Muscle Shoals, and currently is serving his third term as Disaster Services Chairman for the Northwest Alabama Chapter of the American Red Cross. Jane gives her time to the American Cancer Society, volunteers with their church, and went on a one-month mission to Nepal and Bangladesh in 2014.

“Jane and Mike are both extraordinary examples of what we as individuals can do to make our communities stronger and improve the lives of those around us," said Candace Williams, AARP interim state director. "Their selflessness and generosity set a wonderful example for all of us. We're so grateful for their contributions."

Recipients across the nation were chosen for their ability to enhance the lives of AARP members and prospective members, improve the community in or for which the work was performed, and inspire others to volunteer.

AARP Alabama received numerous nominations from across the state, on behalf of outstanding individuals who are volunteering every day to make life better in Alabama. Each year, the selection committee has a challenging job in determining the recipient. Finalists for the Andrus Award in 2015 were:
