While older driver safety is important year-round, Older Driver Safety Awareness Week is a good time to remind older drivers of the importance of safe driving habits. Typically, the first week of December, many major transportation organizations collaborate to encourage older adults, their family members, and caregivers to be proactive about discussing safe mobility and building a transportation plan.
AARP Driver Safety has been offering driving refresher courses since 1979, reaching more than 20 million people. Today, Driver Safety offers a variety of programs to help drivers keep their safety knowledge sharp, so they can remain confident on the road.
In the spirit of Older Driver Safety Awareness Week, check out the list of Driver Safety offerings available, along with additional resources, most of which are free:
- AARP Smart Driver™ course: AARP Driver Safety’s flagship program, it is the nation’s first and longest-running safe driving course designed for older drivers. Find an in-person course near you. Plus, upon completing the course, participants may be eligible for a multiyear discount on their auto insurance.*
- AARP Smart DriverTEKSM: A free workshop on the latest vehicle safety technology including Blind Spot Warnings, Automatic Braking, and more. The workshop is available online, virtually via Zoom, or in-person in select markets.
- AARP SafeTrip™: A free smartphone app that lets drivers securely monitor key driving behaviors like braking, accelerating, and phone use — proven indicators of safe driving practices and crash prevention. Drivers can more clearly see how they’re doing and how they can improve.
- CarFit®: A free educational program that helps older drivers make adjustments in their car to ensure it “fits” just right for maximum safety and comfort. Available in-person, online or virtually via Zoom, CarFit was developed in collaboration with AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).
- Driving at Night Workshop: A free workshop on Zoom to learn about vision changes, headlight technology, assistive driving tools, and essential tips for safer, more confident nighttime driving, including real-life testimonials and useful suggestions.
- Electric & Hybrid Vehicle Workshop: A free workshop on Zoom to explore the spectrum of Electric & Hybrid Vehicles available today and to learn about the important aspects related to purchasing, driving, charging, and more.
- We Need to Talk: A free virtual and online seminar to help families have those difficult conversations with loved ones about when to limit driving or hang up the keys.
- Quick Learnings: Free, short educational videos and resources on vehicles, driving, alternative transportation and much more.
