AARP fully supports the bipartisan Lowering Costs for Caregivers Act by Senators Jacky Rosen (D-NV) and Bill Cassidy (R-LA).
This bill would make it more affordable for adult children to support aging parents by lowering costs for caregivers.
It would also allow people to use their tax-free health savings accounts and flexible spending accounts on medical expenses for their parents, in addition to their spouses and dependents, as allowed under the current law. As of now, you can not do any of this.
On average, America’s 48 million family caregivers spend over $7,200 annually out-of-pocket on caregiving expenses.
This is an important step to provide them some much needed financial relief that can also help reduce their stress, especially for caregivers who simultaneously care for their parents and their children.
We applaud the bipartisan efforts of Senators Rosen and Cassidy to improve the lives of caregivers across the country.
