New Option for Paying Colorado Property Taxes

Finances Calculator

For the past two years, AARP Colorado has been actively working to address the issue of rising property taxes affecting many communities across the state. We know rising property taxes can put a financial strain on many older Coloradans. With a $1,437 median property tax payment in 2025, property taxes continue to financially impact Coloradans 50 and older.

This year, AARP Colorado worked with State House Representative Cecelia Espenoza (House District 4) to support House Bill 25-1199, Property Tax Payment Schedule.

While the legislation ultimately did not pass, our advocacy helped pave the way for meaningful change – leading the Colorado County Treasurer and Public Trustee Association to introduce a new payment option – a monthly property tax installment program for homeowners.

For Coloradans who own their homes, property taxes are typically paid in one or two lump-sum payments. For Coloradans who are on a fixed income and don’t pay a mortgage, paying property taxes in one or two payments can cause financial hardship.

This provides older Coloradans with a new option to manage their property tax payment through monthly installments.

AARP Colorado thanks the County Treasurers for bringing forward this new option to help older Coloradans currently struggling with paying their property tax bill. Contact your County Treasurer to see if this option is available in your county.

It is critical for every Coloradan to know and understand the fiscal tools and resources available to them and to make informed decisions about what makes the most financial sense for themselves and their families.
