New Wellness for the Caregiver Webinar Series

Maybe you care for a loved one, or are a paid caregiver. In any case, caring for someone who has dementia, physical disabilities or other age-related conditions can take its toll on your physical health, energy levels and emotions.

AARPCO wants to help you stay strong, mobile and mindful through this Wellness for Caregivers, a new interactive program created with caregivers in mind. Join us for this 3-part series, focusing on topics like Strength & Balance, Stretching & Mobility and Mindfulness.

Led by certified fitness instructor, Sue Kartheiser, you will learn tips on how to achieve wellness while caregiving; staying strong, mobile and mindful in order to prevent injuries, burnout and stress that could lead to disease.

Session One
Strength and Balance
Tuesday, April 23, 2024
11 a.m. - 12 p.m.

This session will teach caregivers how and why to do strength and balance exercises. Focus will be on gaining strength and preventing injuries. Use of proper mechanics and form will be emphasized. Exercises will be offered that can be done while caregiving to support muscle strength required for duties such as transfers, bathing, feeding and dressing your loved one.

No equipment will be necessary, rubber tubes/bands, stability balls and light hand weights are optional. Exercises will be demonstrated with and without equipment.

Session Two
Stretching and Mobility
Tuesday, April 30, 2024
11 a.m. - 12 p.m.

This session will teach caregivers how and why to do stretching and mobility exercises. Focus will be on incorporating these exercises as appropriate (ex: before AND after transfers) to prevent injuries while increasing mobility, flexibility and recovery from the physical tasks required of Caregivers.

No equipment will be needed. Standing, seated and lying down variations will be shown so that caregivers can best adapt the exercises to their environment.

Session Three
Mindfulness

This session will teach caregivers how to use a variety of mindfulness exercises to reduce stress and increase feelings of calmness, energy and wellness as needed.

No equipment will be needed. The exercises will include breathing techniques, simple meditations, and journaling.

These classes are free, but you must pre-register.

About our instructor:
Sue Kartheiser is a certified personal trainer/fitness instructor and obtained her certification in Nutrition Counseling from Trinity School of Natural Health. Sue has two Bachelor of Science Degrees in Education from Vanderbilt University. She has been operating her fitness, nutrition and wellness business, Stay Fit With Sue, since 2004. In addition to wellness, her background includes teaching the blind and visually impaired and sales management for Microsoft and Intel. Sue blends her training, teaching and communication skills with supportive compassion to empower individuals to achieve and maintain their optimal health and wellness goals. She believes in a holistic approach to wellness for mind, body and spirit and is currently completing course work to be a certified Meditation Teacher and Coach.
