The holiday season in Atlanta just got a whole lot merrier as AARP Atlanta and WJZA Smooth Jazz 101.1/101.1 came together to spread warmth, joy, and delicious treats to seniors residing at two senior living apartment buildings in the metro area. The spirit of giving was alive and thriving as our teams embarked on a mission to brighten the days of these beloved community members.

Led by AARP Georgia State Director Debra Tyler Horton, the events on Friday unfolded into a heartwarming celebration. Debra, in her impactful speeches, delivered messages of unwavering support and assurance, letting the seniors know they are cherished and valued within their community. Her emotional connection resonated deeply, touching hearts and fostering a sense of togetherness among all present.

Decked out in Santa hats, our team members added an extra sprinkle of holiday cheer, while candy canes were joyously distributed to further elevate the festive spirits. Lunch was a delicious affair catered by Delilah’s Everyday Soul, featuring mouthwatering delights like chicken, macaroni and cheese, vegetables, and pound cake for dessert. Each meal was accompanied by gift bags, making the occasion even more special for our beloved seniors.

What's a festive celebration without music? The talented saxophone player, Melvin Miller from the Jazz station, serenaded everyone with soulful renditions of classic Christmas tunes. The lively melodies added an enchanting aura to the gathering, and the jubilant mood was infectious.

At the Maggie Russel Towers on Ralph McGill Boulevard and Wheat Street Towers on Auburn Avenue, more than 150 free meals were distributed, creating moments of joy and connection within the community. Not only were stomachs filled with delicious food, but hearts were also warmed with the camaraderie and the thoughtful gesture behind this event.

The festivities didn’t end there; there were several raffles for prizes including gift cards, and the atmosphere was brimming with holiday fervor. We were delighted to have a representative from the office of Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens and a city councilmember join us to further elevate the sense of community and togetherness.

This collaborative effort between AARP Atlanta and WJZA Smooth Jazz 101.1/101.1 is a testament to the power of community, compassion, and the joy that comes from sharing during the holiday season. It's these heartwarming moments that remind us of the true spirit of the holidays—coming together, supporting one another, and spreading love.
