Beware of Holiday Scams

Beware of holiday scams!

During the holiday season, AARP Illinois is reminding members how to protect themselves from fraud and scams.

Beware of deals that are too good to be true. Type in a retailer’s website instead of clicking on an emailed link. Avoid public Wi-Fi for making purchases and always use a credit card rather than a debit card.

Buy gift cards directly from the retail store instead of from open racks, where thieves can skim information. Ask the cashier to scan the card to ensure it has the correct balance.

Beware of package-delivery scams, which involve fake emails appearing to be from the delivery company, leading to sign-in pages asking for personal information.

Also, before donating to a charity, verify the organization through Giving.org or Charity Navigator.
