The Illinois General Assembly and Governor Rauner will now have to now work through June on a budget solution -- with no certainty that they will pass by the end of the fiscal year, June 30.

The Speaker, Governor and members of the Illinois General Assembly continue, after two years and three legislative sessions, to put partisan politics and their upcoming re-election chances ahead of the well-being of Illinois and people who live here.

AARP Illinois is urging everyone to demand action from the Governor and your state legislators. Urge them to have a plan to fix our state’s ailing finances - once and for all - and hold them accountable if they don’t.

ENOUGH is ENOUGH!!!

The state’s debt keeps growing and the backlog of unpaid bills keep piling up forcing many service providers to lay workers off, cut the hours to dedicate to take care of their clients, or shut down altogether further hurting many local economics across Illinois.

Illinois has been without a balanced budget for too long, and residents of all ages are suffering through the lack of depleted services. Jobs are being lost across the state as community agencies are laying workers off, cutting their hours, or shutting down altogether.

  • Illinois has been 24 months without a budget - longer than any other state in the nation
  • Backlog of unpaid bills has reached $13 billion
  • Unpaid bills rise by a rate of $500 million a month
  • Unfunded public pension obligations have reached $130 billion
  • Illinois’ credit has been downgraded to just one notch above junk status – lower credit rating of any state in the nation

While nothing goes on in Springfield, millions of Illinois citizens of all ages are suffering from depleted services, from vulnerable seniors who can no longer receive meals and services in their own homes, to students who will not be able to go to college, to working families struggling to get by, to crime victims who are unable to receive assistance, treatment, or therapy.

Jobs are being lost across the state as community agencies are laying workers off, cutting their hours, or shutting down altogether.

Enough is Enough!
