AARP Iowa welcomed Robert Lyons as its new Outreach Manager on September 15. In this role, Robert will lead volunteer engagement, community outreach, and event planning.
Robert brings a wide range of experience—from founding service organizations to working in government, politics, and previously at AARP. He started his AARP journey in 2017 with AARP Advocates, focusing on issues like caregiving and fraud. Most recently, Robert served as a Chief of Staff in Rural Development at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
A native of Denison, Iowa, Robert earned his undergraduate degree from Simpson College, double-majoring in Public Relations and Political Science. He later completed a Master’s in Public Administration at American University in Washington, D.C.
“Robert’s extensive background in public service, volunteer leadership, and strategic outreach will be a great asset to our team,” said AARP Iowa State Director Michael Wagler.
Robert is passionate about making Iowa a great place for the 50-plus community, with a focus on livable communities, fraud prevention, and lifelong learning. He’s also deeply committed to service, having founded Rotary-aligned clubs and currently serving as a Kiwanis Club Board Secretary.
Fun fact: Robert visited all 50 states before graduating high school!
