Did you know that every two seconds, someone’s identity gets stolen? One way to help prevent identity theft and protect against fraud is to shred your confidential documents.
That’s why AARP is having a Shred Event and Food Drive on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Dillons at 37th and Woodlawn. Participants can bring up to three boxes of confidential documents and get a free coffee drink courtesy of AARP at the Starbucks located inside Dillons. In exchange, AARP is asking for food donations to benefit those served by the Kansas Food Bank. Storage bins will be available at the entrance to Dillons for the food donations.
“It’s a win-win situation,” said AARP Kansas Director Maren Turner. “Together we’ll help those who are hungry in our community and help protect against identity theft by providing a way for folks to shred their confidential documents that are no longer needed.”
AARP also encourages Kansans to become a part of the nationwide Fraud Watch Network which provides tools to spot and avoid fraud and scams. The Fraud Watch Network provides real-time alerts about the latest scams, tips on how to spot them, and the inside scoop on how con artists think. It also has a scam tracking map that provides access to a network of people who have spotted scams and the opportunity to pass along consumers’ own experiences to beat con artists at their own game. In addition, consumers who contact the Fraud Watch Network can speak to a real live person who is trained in how to spot and avoid fraud. Visit fraudwatchnetwork.org for more information.
