Will You Volunteer for Tax-Aide?
What started out as a program with just four volunteers in 1968, has now grown to a program with more than 35,000 volunteers nationwide in 2014. That program is the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program—the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service. The program serves taxpayers with low to moderate incomes, giving special attention to the older population.
Here in Kansas, 385 Tax-Aide volunteers across the state helped more than 30,000 Kansans file their federal and state tax returns in 2014. The program is offered at approximately 75 sites in Kansas including senior centers, libraries and other convenient locations.
The Tax-Aide program thrives due to the remarkable efforts if its volunteers and there are always opportunities for new volunteers—especially in western Kansas and other rural areas.
Are you interested in becoming a Tax-Aide volunteer or do you know someone who is? If the answer is yes, the AARP State Office and State Tax-Aide Coordinator Steve Robbins would love to hear from you. Don’t worry about lack of tax or accounting experience. Tax volunteers must complete a tax preparation workshop from the Internal Revenue Service prior to working with taxpayers. There are other volunteer opportunities as well such as grass-roots leadership, on-site greeters and those who can provide language assistance.
“Our volunteers are dedicated, compassionate people who have a desire to serve others in their communities,” said Robbins. “We hope more Kansans will join us in our efforts so that we can accommodate those who really need our service.”
