FIGHTING FOR YOU

Working to improve coordination between hospitals and caregivers
AARP Kansas is proud to have fought for the passage of the Kansas Lay Caregiver Act, which provides crucial support for caregivers when their loved ones go into the hospital. It requires hospitals to:
1. Ask patients if they wish to identify a caregiver, and then record that caregiver in the medical record
2. Inform caregivers when their loved one is set to be discharged from the hospital
3. Instruct caregivers on aftercare tasks they will need to perform at home, including wound care and medication management

New Law Creates Caregiver Advisory Committee
AARP’s National Volunteer President Catherine Alicia Georges serves on the RAISE Family Caregiving Advisory Council, created by a bipartisan federal law that AARP fought hard to pass. The Council is charged with developing a national strategy to support family caregivers that includes communities, providers, government, and others.
