Think your gas bill is too high now? It's about to cost you more if Atmos Energy gets its way. Atmos has filed an application with the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) seeking to increase base rates by $9.6 million. Atmos is asking the KCC to approve an increase in the monthly customer charge by more than $3 per month. The proposed increase, from $18.04 per month to $22 per month, would mean Atmos customers in Kansas would pay one of the highest customer charges in the country. This customer charge is the price you pay even before you turn on your gas furnace or stove.
Atmos is also requesting a new surcharge for customers on top of the other rate increases. These additional charges can be significant, and not only for customers with lower or fixed incomes. All of the more than 135,000 Atmos customers in Kansas stand to be substantially impacted by the rate increase sought in Atmos's application.
What can you do? Tell the KCC how you and your family will be affected by another rate increase. You can urge the KCC not to approve the rate increase requested by Atmos.
The KCC is accepting public comments until 5 p.m. on December 13, 2019. There are three ways to submit a comment:
1.) Go to the KCC website and click on the "Your Opinion Matters" link to submit a comment.
2.) Send a written letter to the Kansas Corporation Commission, Office of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, 1500 SW Arrowhead Road, Topeka, KS 66604-4027. Be sure to reference Docket No. 199-ATMG-525-RTS.
3.) Call the Commission's Public Affairs office at 1-800-662-0027 or 785-271-3140.
According to the KCC, a decision on the rate increase request will be issued on or before February 24, 2020.
