AARP is Fighting to Reduce Prescription Drug Prices in Massachusetts

AARP Massachusetts backs a Mass Senate bill that would make drug companies and pharmacy benefit managers act more transparently when it comes to pharmaceutical costs.

AARP Massachusetts submitted written testimony to the Joint Committee on Health Care Financing urging the committee to pass Senate Bill No. 749 - An Act Relative To Pharmaceutical Access, Costs And Transparency.

In testimony AARP State Director Mike Festa pointed out how important prescription drugs are to Massachusetts residents 50+.

“Appropriate use of prescription drugs may prolong life, improve quality of life, and postpone or replace the need for intensive, often expensive medical treatments.  Older Americans use prescription drugs more than any other segment of the U.S. population, and unfortunately many older Americans – particularly Medicare beneficiaries – continue to struggle to afford their prescription medication. This is not such good news.”

The testimony highlighted the frustration many feel when they’re paying for their prescriptions.

“Americans are sick and tired of paying the highest prices in the world for their prescription drugs.  They can't afford to pay more than 3 times what people in other countries pay for the same medicine.” Mike Festa, Sate Director AARP Massachusetts “And, people shouldn't have to choose between buying medicine and paying for food or rent. “

AARP led the fight to lower drug prices, and last summer, we won. Millions of seniors will save money on their medications. After decades of calling on Congress to make prescription drugs more affordable, AARP won the fight for Medicare to negotiate lower drug prices and help seniors save money on their medications. This is a historic victory, but the fight isn't over. Big drug companies will spend millions trying to overturn the law so they can keep charging Americans the highest prices in the world. AARP will keep fighting big drug companies’ out-of-control prices, and we won't back down.
