The Social Security Administration (SSA) has announced a significant and unexpected change requiring certain customer service requests to be handled in person, eliminating the ability for many Americans to get assistance by phone. This shift, set to take effect in just two weeks, could create unnecessary barriers for millions—especially older adults, people with disabilities, and rural residents who may have to travel long distances or take time off work just to access basic Social Security services.

As voters prepare for the upcoming general election on Tuesday, Nov. 5, AARP Michigan is excited to introduce “Paula,” a new digital tool designed to answer questions about voting in Michigan. This avatar chatbot engages with visitors in nearly any language, providing clear, voice-to-voice responses to questions about voting procedures, who’s on the ballot and more.

As we look ahead to 2025, Michigan's retirees will see a 2.5% increase in their Social Security benefits, marking a much-needed adjustment to help offset rising living costs. This follows a 3.2% increase in 2024, bringing a continued focus on supporting older adults who depend on these benefits to manage their daily expenses.
